How to measure hair health at home, without guessing
Most advice asks you to eyeball your hair in a mirror. Here are the five properties of a hair fibre you can actually measure, and what each one tells you.
Ask someone how their hair is doing and you will get an impression: better lately, worse in winter, fried since the bleach. Impressions are real, but they are not measurements. They drift with lighting, mood and memory, which is why the same hair can feel great on Tuesday and hopeless on Friday.
The surface of a hair fibre, though, is a physical object with physical properties. Five of them can be read optically, from the outside, without touching the follicle or making any medical claim. Together they describe most of what people mean when they say their hair looks healthy.
The five properties that can actually be measured
Shine is the share of light a lock reflects in a mirror-like way. A closed, flat cuticle reflects like a smooth surface; a lifted cuticle scatters light in every direction and reads as dull. Shine is the first thing the eye judges, long before anyone thinks the word 'healthy'.
Frizz, counted properly, is the number of fibres leaving the axis of a lock per centimetre. It is the one property where less is better, and it rises with two very different causes: humidity, which is reversible, and breakage, which is not. That double origin is exactly why it is worth counting rather than eyeballing.
Thickness is the average diameter of the fibre, measured in microns. It moves slowly, over months rather than days, which makes it the baseline of the whole system: fast measurements tell you about your week, diameter tells you about your year.
Color, measured as a colorimetric distance from a fixed reference, drifts before the eye notices. Sun, chlorine and fading dye all show up as a growing delta E long before a friend says anything.
Surface is the state of the cuticle's micro-scales, read under grazing light. It is the finest and fastest-moving of the five, and the first to respond when a routine changes.
Why one number is not enough, and why five are
Any single measurement can mislead. Shine alone rewards silicone coatings that mask damage. Frizz alone punishes curl patterns that are perfectly healthy. The useful signal is the combination, weighted and tracked over time against your own starting point, not against someone else's hair.
That last part matters most. A reading of 82 on coily hair and a reading of 82 on straight hair mean the same thing: above your own baseline. Comparing yourself to a norm mostly measures genetics. Comparing yourself to yourself measures what you actually control, which is routine.
What to do without a lab
You can approximate some of this by hand: photograph the same lock in the same window light every Sunday, count stray fibres against a dark card, keep the photos in one album and refuse to judge anything on less than three weeks of pictures. It is crude, but it beats memory.
The reason we built FIBR is that the by-hand version fails at consistency: lighting changes, angles change, patience runs out. A clamp that holds a hundred strands flat under known lighting, at the same angles every time, in twenty seconds, exists precisely to make the measurement boring and repeatable. Boring and repeatable is what a trend needs.
