Frizz is data: what stray fibres say about humidity and breakage

Frizz gets treated as a styling annoyance. Counted per centimetre, it is an early-warning signal with two very different causes, one reversible and one not.

Of the five things you can measure on a hair fibre, frizz is the least glamorous and possibly the most informative. It is also the only one where a lower number is better, which says something about how it works.

What frizz physically is

Take a lock of hair and look at its silhouette against the light. Most fibres follow the axis of the lock. Some leave it: they arc away, stick out, or float. Frizz, measured rather than felt, is the count of those deviating fibres per centimetre of length.

A fibre leaves the axis for one of two reasons. Either it is intact but responding to moisture, or it is broken and the short end is springing free. The first is chemistry doing its job; the second is damage announcing itself.

The humidity kind

Hair is hygroscopic: it absorbs water from the air. Water breaks the temporary hydrogen bonds that hold a fibre's shape, so each fibre relaxes toward its own natural curvature, which is slightly different from its neighbour's. The lock loses coherence and the silhouette fuzzes. This kind of frizz is honest, weather-dependent and fully reversible. It rises on humid days and falls with the dew point.

The breakage kind

The second kind does not care about the weather. When fibres snap, from heat, tension, bleach embrittlement or rough brushing, the broken ends are short and stiff, and they stick out permanently. A frizz count that climbs week over week regardless of humidity is not a styling problem. It is an early breakage signal, and it usually shows up in the count before it is visible in the mirror.

This is why the trend matters more than the reading. A spike on a rainy Tuesday means nothing. A steady climb across three dry weeks means something specific: fibres are failing, and whatever changed in the routine around when the climb started is the first suspect.

One practical consequence

If you only remember one thing: never judge frizz, yours or a product's effect on it, from a single day. Humidity is loud and damage is quiet. Separating them takes repeated measurements under comparable conditions, which is exactly why FIBR scans the same lock, at the same spot, under the same lighting, and reads the count against your own baseline rather than against a universal number.
